Are you planning a trip to the Var region in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur? Be sure to stop by the Saint-Tropez Peninsula to explore Cap Camarat. This exceptional site offers breathtaking natural beauty, with white cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and stretches of fine sand. Campsite Miremer, a campsite in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, invites you to discover Cap Camarat and offers you the chance to stay at the campsite while you’re there.
History of Cap Camarat
The history of Cap Camarat is believed to date back to the Napoleonic era—as evidence of human occupation from that period has been found. This site on the Saint-Tropez peninsula subsequently witnessed several significant events, notably the construction of its lighthouse and semaphore station in 1829—structures that were occupied during World War II. Although the Société Civile Coumipez succeeded in purchasing part of the Camarat Estate in 1950 to build a house with several outbuildings, other plans to develop housing subdivisions ultimately did not come to fruition, having been rejected by the municipality of Ramatuelle, to which Cap Camarat belongs . The land was then transferred in 1977 to the Conservatoire du Littoral, which works daily to conserve, preserve, and promote the area’s heritage.
The Cap Camarat Lighthouse
Rising 130 meters above the sea, the Cap Camarat lighthouse is an emblematic site to discover during your getaway on the Saint-Tropez peninsula. Although it cannot be visited at the moment, for safety reasons, the Conservatoire du Littoral is planning to open it to the public. The lighthouse has been automated since 1977, so there’s no longer any need for a lighthouse keeper. For the keepers who were lucky enough to climb up there, the lighthouse offered a breathtaking view of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. Since 2012, the lighthouse has been listed on the Inventaire Supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques.
The Flora and Fauna of Cap Camarat
While Cap Camarat unveils its iconic lighthouse to visitors, it also boasts exceptional flora and fauna, albeit somewhat diminished by a fire in July 2017. There are some eighty species of birds and numerous insects, reptiles and marine species. From the Blue Monticole to the Hermann tortoise, adventurers discovering Cap Camarat may be lucky enough to observe this incredible fauna. In terms of flora, the cape is home to pine forests and cork oak forests.
