The event was born on June 21, 1982. Jack Lang, then Minister of Culture, and Maurice Fleuret were behind it. A survey had revealed that 5 million French people played an instrument. The aim was to give them a stage all over France, on the day of the summer solstice. More than 120 countries now celebrate this date, which has become a worldwide cultural event.
